The Problem
A Grade II listed Georgian townhouse required sensitive roof restoration. The original clay tiles were failing, and the owner needed work done in compliance with listed building consent requirements.
Our Diagnosis
Approximately 30% of the original handmade clay tiles were cracked or delaminating. The lead valleys needed relining, and several areas of pointing on the chimney stacks had failed. Listed building consent was required for the works.
Materials Used
The Result
Sympathetic restoration preserving the property's character. We salvaged and reused approximately 70% of the original tiles, supplementing with handmade clay tiles from a specialist supplier. Lead valleys relined, chimney stacks repointed in lime mortar. All work completed within listed building consent conditions.
"Listed building work requires a different mindset. You're not just fixing a roof — you're preserving a piece of London's architectural heritage. We used lime mortar, not cement, to repoint the chimneys because that's what the building was designed for. The handmade replacement tiles will weather to match the originals within a few years."
