The Problem
A Victorian mid-terrace property in Battersea had sustained storm damage, with several slates blown off. The owner wanted the immediate damage fixed and the rest of the roof assessed.
Our Diagnosis
The storm damage exposed a wider problem — nail sickness across most of the roof. We found corroded fixings throughout, meaning more slates would slip in future storms. We recommended a full re-slate rather than ongoing patchwork.
Materials Used
The Result
Full re-slate with premium Spanish natural slate, closely matching the original Welsh slate. New breathable membrane and treated battens throughout. All lead flashings renewed and chimney repointed. Dry ridge system installed for the ridge tiles.
"This is a common situation with Victorian slate roofs in Battersea — the slates are fine, but the original iron fixings are giving up after 100+ years. The homeowner was tempted to just replace the storm-damaged slates, but that would have been a false economy. Within 2-3 years, they'd have been calling us back after every storm. A full re-slate with stainless fixings solves the problem permanently."

"After the storm, I expected to just have a few slates replaced. HRS showed me the corroded nails and explained why patching wouldn't last. The full re-slate was a bigger investment, but the result is stunning and I won't be worrying about the next storm."
